Ocean Park Proudly Supports International Coastal Cleanup 2011 for the 8th Consecutive Year

2011-10-31

(Hong Kong – 31 October 2011) Ocean Park has supported the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) initiative for the 8th consecutive year by sending 78 volunteers to a beach near Ocean Park on 29 October.

The team of volunteers included 25 Ocean Park SmartFun Annual Pass holders, 26 teachers and students from Sheng Kung Hui Tang Shiu Kin Secondary School and 27 staff helpers from Ocean Park, some of whom are taking part in this meaningful global event for the first time. They collected a total of 38 bags of waste weighing 156 kg. Materials mainly consisted of Styrofoam plastic boxes, beverage bottles (plastic) and construction materials.

During the 2010 International Coastal Cleanup, 615,407 volunteers removed 3.9 million kilograms of debris, across 114 countries. Locally, 2,906 participants cleaned more than 8,000 kilograms of debris from Hong Kong’s beautiful coastlines.

Ocean Park Chief Executive Tom Mehrmann said, “Coastal protection is an issue that demands our continuous attention, and Ocean Park has always been strongly supportive of community initiatives in Hong Kong such as the International Coastal Cleanup to raise eco-awareness among the public. Apart from supporting the no-straws initiative for a number of years, our “a-box-a-day” staff incentive program, which encourages Park staff to use personal lunch boxes for takeout orders from staff canteens, continues to receive strong support. From December 2007 to June 2011, over 19,600 meals were served in personal containers. We hope that our work will inspire even more people among the community to recognize the importance of conserving the environment.”
