Ocean Park Chairman Allan Zeman’s first attempt at special effects make-up in celebration of Ocean Park Halloween Bash’s 10th anniversary

2010-07-24

(24 July 2010, Hong Kong) A devoted supporter of Ocean Park and a good sport whenever it comes to making a grand appearance at the Park’s events, Ocean Park’s Chairman Dr. Allan Zeman is known for surprising guests with his ever-changing looks and disguises. In the past few years, Allan Zeman has appeared as various impressive characters for the Park’s Halloween Bash events. This year, to mark the special occasion of the 10th anniversary of Ocean Park Halloween Bash, Allan once again attempts  a new styling breakthrough with  the use of special effects make-up and has even recently undergone a Lifecasting process!

The process of Lifecasting is the first step in creating extreme 3-dimensional prosthetic makeup led by the Park’s team of professional special effects makeup artists.  This special form of makeup is used to transform a person into a totally different character, or drastically alter their features. The end result of the Lifecast will be an almost exact replica of the person’s face or head in dense stone or cement.  Once this procedure is completed, the bust of the subject may also be reproduced and used to create prosthetic appliances which the makeup artist can apply to create the new features.

To create the bust requires the person to be covered in an impression material, which is reinforced with plaster to make a temporary negative mould of the person’s face or head. The mould will then be filled with stone to create a solid, permanent bust. The initial casting of the person usually requires about 45 minutes.  During this time, the head and shoulders are completely covered, leaving only small holes at the end of the nose for breathing.

Always innovative and adventurous, Allan Zeman excitedly recounted the experience with a smile on his face, ‘It was an amazing experience! I had to close my eyes throughout the process and was feeling a bit nervous at first. However, just thinking about the surprised looks on people’s faces when they see my new appearance quickly replaces my anxiety with feelings of excitement and anticipation. Ocean Park was the pioneer in creating the Halloween Bash in the Asia region in 2001 and has successfully grown it into an annual signature event for Asia and Hong Kong. For its 10th anniversary, Ocean Park Halloween Bash this year will bring the largest, most exciting and most terrifying attractions you have seen yet with the greatest number of attractions, shows and scary characters. I hope you will all come join our biggest ever Halloween Bash Party.”

In the past few years, Allan has appeared as a traditional Chinese ghost groom, Chung Kwai the famed Chinese ghostbuster, a Chinese vampire, and even a Chinese paper doll; his glamorous appearance as a flamboyant ghost bride was also very well received. He said, 'We want to bring joy and a special Halloween atmosphere to our guests at this year’s Ocean Park Halloween Bash. Over the years, we have incorporated different local elements that Hong Kong people are familiar with to create a more immersive experience for our guests. The various looks and costumes I have put on over the years have also been designed to reflect this theme. Rather than looking at it as hard work, I enjoy the process immensely and look forward to it every year."

In fact, many people also share Allan’s passion of dressing up as scary characters. During the auditions for the 10th Ocean Park Halloween Bash which started on 3 July, over 1,200 candidates interviewed for roles including Halloween performers, dancers, stunt performers, gymnasts, Extreme Sports Specialists and backstage crews.

This year, Ocean Park Halloween Bash will reveal 20 all-new attractions and programs and 444 Halloween ghouls and stunt performers, 10% more than last year.  150 backstage crews will also be recruited.
