Ocean Park is excited to share the latest news about Hong Kong’s adorable giant panda twins. Elder sister Jia Jia and little brother De De turned 15 months old earlier this month, and the Park invites visitors to celebrate their remarkable and heartwarming growth journey!
Jia Jia and De De turned 15 months old on 15 November. The siblings now weigh a whopping 35 kg, both showing healthy growth and development.
The cubs have been spending their playtime in a mini waterfall or flowing stream. They are now strong and agile enough to explore the complex enrichment elements in their habitat, which offer greater physical and mental stimulations.
The cubs have transitioned from shredded bamboo and carrots to wowotou (steamed corn bread) and whole bamboo shoots, marking a significant milestone in their dietary development.
The cubs are also receiving basic husbandry training, including ‘recall’ training. When caretakers call their names, Jia Jia and De De are encouraged to move to the desired location, such as from their habitat to the den. Caretakers use positive reinforcement by pairing the training with rewards the cubs enjoy, such as carrots and bamboo shoots. This helps the cubs learn to go to a designated location on their own without having to be physically retrieved by the caretakers.
