AFCD PARTNERED OCEAN PARK TO TREAT AND THEN RELEASE GREEN TURTLE – A PHOTO STORY

2008-10-10

(Hong Kong – 9 October 2008) On 3 October, the vets at Ocean Park received a call from the Agriculture and Fisheries Conservation Department (“AFCD”) to go to Sai Kung to inspect a green turtle that was found in the area.

The veterinary team, consisting of a vet and a nurse, checked the green turtle, which appeared to be normal, except for a prolapsed cloaca. The green turtle was subsequently taken to Ocean Park for further treatment and observation. It fully recovered after a few days. The green turtle was then taken back to where it was found, and released.

This green turtle is a female of approximately 20 to 30 years old. It weighs 160 kg, and is close to one metre in length.

Green turtles are an endangered species. Their mortality is increased as some green turtles died after eating garbage, such a loose pieces of plastic bags and Styrofoam, found floating on the sea. Additionally, breeding is also threatened as humans occupy more and more of their egg-laying grounds. As an advocate for the preservation of marine species, Ocean Park appeals to all to respect nature, and to devote greater efforts to improve marine habitats.
