Ocean Park Supports UNESCO Hong Kong Association’s Peace School Programme

2022-11-12

Organised by UNESCO Hong Kong Association Glocal Peace Centre and supported by Ocean Park, the 2022–2023 Peace School Programme was officially launched at Ocean Park yesterday. The programme aims at nurturing positive values for peacebuilding in children's minds, and the seminar, held in conjunction with the launch ceremony, saw insightful exchanges of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) knowledge among educators.

“To help build inherent capacity for peace and sustainability among our future leaders, Ocean Park is glad to be supporting UNESCO's Peace School Programme with over 30 programmes curated by Ocean Park Academy Hong Kong (OPAHK). Embedding elements of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, the programmes engage youth in conversations and education around the themes of biodiversity, and animal habitats observation and experience. The Park is always dedicated to inspiring young children and students the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development, and had reached more than 470,000 students through our education programmes in the fiscal year 2021–2022 alone,” said Ivan Wong, Chief Executive of Ocean Park Corporation.

Targeting kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and Macau, the Peace School Programme aids schools and their Other Learning Experience (OLE) and Life Wide Learning (LWL) activities using peace as a cross-curriculum theme for peace and positive education. Aligned with UNESCO's mission of building a culture of peace among young people, the programme focuses on youth development through education.

To be recognised as a Peace School, aspiring schools should have a track record of engagement in peacebuilding activities covering community service, participating in United Nations International Days, setting up and meeting the criteria of SDGs, and participating in Culture and Actions for Peace activities, etc.

OPAHK, as a recognised SDG programme partner of UNESCO Hong Kong Association, was founded to deliver educational programmes in the diversified environment and facilities of Ocean Park. It offers illuminating learning experiences to students in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and continues to promote the sustainable development of society and the earth. The diverse themes of the programmes match a series of SDGs proposed by the United Nations including Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life Below Water as well as Life on Land, to protect and ensure the conservation of natural resources.
