Fun Facts

  • Most owls are nocturnal, but that does not mean they only sleep during the day. For instance, the Eurasian eagle-owl primarily forages at night but feeds its chicks during the day. Furthermore, in the Arctic region where there are weeks of "midnight sun" every summer with 24-hour daylight, scientists have found that local Eurasian eagle-owls still go out to forage during this period.

  • The Eurasian eagle-owl has large eyes that can absorb more light, helping them maintain clear vision at night. Additionally, the soft down on the edges of their wings absorbs sound, making them expert nocturnal hunters.

    Distribution

Widely distributed across Europe and Asia. Native to Hong Kong.

      Human Disturbance & Ecosystem Disruption

Leisure activities such as skiing and mountaineering can cause disturbances to Eurasian eagle-owls living nearby. These owls are extremely sensitive to environmental changes and may even abandon their nests as a result. Additionally, they face threats such as culling and pesticide poisoning, as well as fatalities from colliding with infrastructure like power lines and barbed wire fences.
